The Textile Polymath
A weekly newsletter for the amateur textile creative: feeding curiosity, learning by experimentation, and sharing patterns and how-to’s!
Hi! I’m Karen.
I recently left a software engineering role at a large tech company in Seattle. I spent the last couple of years as a research analyst programmer at a medical imaging lab while wrapping up a belated computer science degree. Despite my passion for creative expression and narrative, I spent most of my life in the world of tech. And now I’m venturing into the digital world to embark on a self-made journey.
In the last 6 years, I’ve been in a variety of technical roles in many industries- from working with small business owners to build their e-commerce presence, to smart city planning with open data in local governments, to developing central place foraging algorithms for robot swarms on Mars, to building anomaly detection pipelines to secure critical defense systems, to detecting cerebrovascular indicators of early onset dementia in brain imaging research, and to now engineering text-to-speech capabilities for long-form written content.
In the midst of all this, I’ve been obsessed with textiles on and off since my mother and I learned to crochet for the first time when I was 10. Ever since, it stuck with me as I freehanded so many ideas from thin air into loving wearables. I expanded from single and double crochet to tunisian crochet, japanese knitting, lace, tatting, and more. It’s time that I started documenting and sharing the findings I’ve made over the years to hopefully bring something new and curious to your eyes every week!
Thanks for stopping by!
